Henry Joel Scudder (September 18, 1825 – February 10, 1886) was a United States Representative from New York. ==Biography== Born in Northport, he attended the district school and Huntington Academy. He graduated from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut in 1846. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1848 and practiced in New York City. In 1854 he founded a law firm, which is now known as Carter Ledyard & Milburn. He was commissioned captain in the Thirty-seventh Regiment of the New York National Guard in 1862 and served throughout the Civil War. Scudder was elected as a Republican to the Forty-third Congress, holding office from March 4, 1873 to March 3, 1875. He declined to be a candidate for renomination in 1874 and was a trustee of Trinity College for over twenty years. He resumed the practice of law in New York City, where he died in 1886; interment was in the family cemetery at Northport. Scudder's nephew, Townsend Scudder, was a judge and a U.S. Representative from New York.
